Munich: Festival City

The German city of Munich is a city of culture and commerce. The city has a proud history and has worked hard to hold onto its traditions as it became one of Germany’s commerce centers. The city is world famous for its many festivals and cultural events which tourists will enjoy.

Oktoberfest is Munich is perhaps Germany’s most famous festival. The first festival in Munich was held in during the 19th century to honor a royal wedding. The people of Munich were invited by the prince to celebrate with him and his bride. Throughout the celebration several events were held such as races, pie contests, and other fair like activities. Each year the citizens of the city returned to the field where the fist festival was held to party again. After several years beer began to be popular at the yearly festivals and the Oktoberfest tradition was born. As the birthplace of the fest, many people flock to Munich each October to celebrate. Tents are set up and beer is served to millions of participants every year.

May Day is another important celebration in the city. On May 1st visitors will see the locals dressing in traditional clothing and celebrating around the may pole. The men of the city wear the traditional lederhosen and the women wear the dresses and aprons of the past. The citizens meet in the center of town and erect the maypole. When not dancing and singing, people enjoy food and beer from local venders who have set up tents to feed the masses.
